If you complete the plant science major, for example, there are a variety of specializations that may appeal to you such as biotechnology, crop science, or biomedical engineering. Further, due to advances in agricultural engineering, there is a growing shortage of plant science major graduates, and highly-skilled engineers in general.

Agricultural biotechnology, and crop science in general, includes traditional cross-breeding techniques, trait selection, and genetic engineering in some cases. Biotech crops can make farming more profitable by increasing crop quality and may in some cases increase crop yields. Where biotech crops are grown in proximity to related plants, the potential for the two plant species to exchange traits via pollen must be evaluated. In fact, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), biotechnology crops as a percentage of total crop plantings in the USA were about 88 percent for corn, 94 percent for cotton, and 93 percent for soybeans. Herbicide-tolerant crops are particularly compatible with reduced-tillage commercial agriculture systems that help preserve topsoil from erosion.

USDA researchers seek to solve major agricultural problems and to better understand the basic plant biology relating to crop science. Researchers may use biotechnology processes to discover things that may not be possible by more conventional means. This includes introducing new or improved traits in plants, animals, and microorganisms and creating new biotechnology-based products such as more effective diagnostic tests, improved farm animal vaccines, and better antibiotics. The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts research on the economic aspects of the use of genetically engineered plants, including the rate of adoption of biotechnology by farmers.

Electrical engineers design and test new electrical equipment such as electric motors, communications systems, and power generators. Electronics engineering technicians, on the other hand, work in product evaluation and testing, using measuring and diagnostic equipment. They are also involved in the deployment of new equipment in factory automation. Electrical engineering has several sub-disciplines, including power engineering, software development, and control engineering. Electrical engineers with a bachelors degree earned an average salary of $95,230 in 2015, while engineering technicians with an associates degree earned $61,130 annually.

The field of power engineering deals with the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. These include transformers, electric generators, electric motors, high voltage engineering, and power electronics. Electrical engineers maintain an electrical network called the power grid, that connects a variety of generators using high-voltage transmission lines. Signal processing relates to the analysis and manipulation of signals. Signals can be either analog, in which case the signal varies continuously, or digital, where the signal varies according to a series of discrete values. Control engineering applications range from flight systems of commercial airplanes to industrial automation. Where there is regular feedback, control theory can be used to determine how the system responds.

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public.
