If you complete the plant science major, for example, there are a variety of specializations that may appeal to you such as biotechnology, crop science, or biomedical engineering. Further, due to advances in agricultural engineering, there is a growing shortage of plant science major graduates, and highly-skilled engineers in general.

Agricultural biotechnology, and crop science in general, includes traditional cross-breeding techniques, trait selection, and genetic engineering in some cases. Biotech crops can make farming more profitable by increasing crop quality and may in some cases increase crop yields. Where biotech crops are grown in proximity to related plants, the potential for the two plant species to exchange traits via pollen must be evaluated. In fact, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), biotechnology crops as a percentage of total crop plantings in the USA were about 88 percent for corn, 94 percent for cotton, and 93 percent for soybeans. Herbicide-tolerant crops are particularly compatible with reduced-tillage commercial agriculture systems that help preserve topsoil from erosion.

USDA researchers seek to solve major agricultural problems and to better understand the basic plant biology relating to crop science. Researchers may use biotechnology processes to discover things that may not be possible by more conventional means. This includes introducing new or improved traits in plants, animals, and microorganisms and creating new biotechnology-based products such as more effective diagnostic tests, improved farm animal vaccines, and better antibiotics. The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) conducts research on the economic aspects of the use of genetically engineered plants, including the rate of adoption of biotechnology by farmers.

They design processes and equipment for large-scale manufacturing, plan and test production methods and byproducts treatment, and direct facility operations. Most chemical engineers have a bachelors degree in chemical engineering, as well as internship experience. They may spend a large portion of their work day at industrial plants, refineries, and other locations, where they monitor or direct operations or solve onsite problems. The average salary for chemical engineers was $97,360 as reported the US Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2015.

Biomedical engineers to design equipment, devices, computer systems, and software used in healthcare. Bachelors degree programs in bioengineering include extensive lab-work, and courses such as fluid mechanics, computer programming, circuit design, and biomaterials. Accredited programs also include substantial training in engineering design, and practical internships in medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. The median annual wage for biomedical engineers was $86,220 in May 2015. Further, employment of biomedical engineers is projected to grow 23% in the next decade, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public.
